News from Balancing Justice SystemLast spring, many of the Balancing Justice study circles across New York State discussed the Rockefeller Drug Laws. However, because of the complexity of the issues involved and limited time for consideration, no statewide or local task forces emerged to work toward change. Now that Governor Pataki has indicated support for modification of the drug laws during the 2001 legislative session, it is important that citizens become educated on this Issue. To this end, the New York State Balancing Justice Project will offer special one-session study circles on New York State Drug Policy this spring. *We invite you to participate in a one session, three hour study circle on NYS Drug Policy to be held during the week of April 23. Please join us! Indicate on the enclosed form your preference of meeting time and place and return to Jane Bentsen, 177 Washington Street, Geneva, NY 14456 by March 15. A packet of information on NYS Drug Policy will be mailed prior to your study circle meeting. *We invite you to attend a panel discussion on the Rockefeller Drug Laws sponsored by the League of women voters of Geneva. This is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 7:00 p.m., at the Geneva Free Library, corner of Main and Castle Streets. (List participants.) *Mark your calendar for a Balancing Justice Revisited forum Wednesday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the Safety Training Building in Hopewell. We hope that all Balancing Justice participants will be able to attend. Task Force members will share results, evaluate progress and set goals for the coming year. If you have any questions or comments, contact Kim Reisch (315) 789-7104 or Jane Bentsen (315) 789-9068. |
