Honeoye Lake Aquatic Vegetation/Weeds Management Program

Current Harvesting Season Activities

September 1, 2008

Harvesting this week will be Tuesday thru Friday due to Monday being Labor Day.  The town’s harvester was removed Wednesday August 27 because two of the harvesting personal were returning to driving school bus.  There will be just one harvester harvesting for the next two weeks.  September 2-5 harvesting will be located at California Ranch working both the mid-lake and north end areas.  The following week harvesting will be at the south end of the lake from September 8-11 with the New York State Boat Launch being the unloading site.  Harvesting will be finished on September 11 and the county harvester will be removed the following week.  A post card will be mailed out notify shoreline owners they can remove their waterline markers after September 12.

The aquatic weed harvesting for the week of August 18-21 will be the same as last week.  The harvesting will be located on the south end of the lake at the boat launch.  Harvesting on the west side north to Pickerel Point and on the east side north to Sunny Hollow.  The past weeks harvesting went very well.  The vegetation at the south end is quite heavy and the men believe an extra week down in that location would be more beneficial than back at California Ranch or midlake location.

The aquatic weed harvesting for the week of August 12-15, that will be Tuesday thru Friday harvesting time frame, will be located on the south end of the lake at the boat launch.  Harvesting on the west side north to Pickerel Point and on the east side north to Sunny Hollow.  The past weeks harvesting went very well.  Some time was lost to weather conditions but not as bad as previous weeks.

The Aquatic Weed Harvesting Program will be conducting harvesting operations from the California Ranch site starting Monday August 4 through Thursday August 7, 2008.  Harvesting will be done on the west side from Pickerel Point to Sandy Bottom and on the east side from Sunny Hollow north to North Shore.  The county harvester installed a new fuel pump and is presently running great.  Very few hours were lost to weather or maintenance this past week.

The Aquatic Weed Program will be located at the south end of the lake for the week of July 28-31.  Harvesting will travel from the NYS Boat Launch up to around Pickerel Point on the west side and Sunny Hollow on the east side.  A few hours were lost last week to weather and the county harvester’s hydraulics acting up but hopefully the harvester problem is solved and the weather is anyone’s call.

Harvesting for the week of July 21-24 will be in the area around mid-lake or the California Ranch area.  Some activity might be on the north end but two weeks ago the vegetation was very light and did not produce much vegetation for the extended hours of harvesting.  Last weeks harvesting on the south end of the lake was very heavy.  The harvesting operation lost about six hours of harvesting because the County’s harvester had a problem with the header.  The support shaft from the hydraulic cylinder to the headed itself broke.  The Town of Richmond was kind enough to bring down the back hoe so the header could be supported and blocked so the harvester could be removed from the lake.  A portable welder was brought in and the shaft was welded and re-enforced.  Two other areas that showed fatigue were also welded.  The welding took about two hours and back in the water and back to harvesting.  I would like to thank John, Paul and Randy for quick thinking and great ideas on removing the disabled harvester from the lake and the getting the repairs fixed in a very timely manner.

Next week the harvesting will return to the south end of the lake were the vegetation is the heaviest.

Weed harvesting will take place on the south end of Honeoye Lake from July 14-17th.  One harvester will be on the west side and one on the east side.

Last weeks harvesting showed very little vegetation at the north end of Honeoye Lake and moderate vegetation mid-lake.  The south end of the lake appears to have the heaviest vegetation at the start of the harvesting season.

The harvesting for the week of July 7-10 will be the area of mid-lake with the California Ranch being the unloading site.  Harvesting will take place around mid-lake to the north end.  The harvesting operators say the water clarity is the best in years, maybe ever, during the harvesting operation.

Last weeks harvesting was cut short due to problems with the county dump truck but the problem is fixed and harvesting continued.  Next week (July 14-17) the harvesting will return to the south end due to some lost time last week.

The Aquatic Weed Harvesting season begins on Monday June 30, 2008.

The harvesting season will begin on the South end of Honeoye Lake and work up along both the east and west sides of the lake with the two harvesters covering approximately one-third of the southern portion of the lake.  As in past years the AWMP will be using the New York State Boat Launch site as an unloading site.  The following week the harvesting operation will be located at the California Ranch site and cover the mid-lake area.

This website will be updated weekly throughout the harvesting season.
