Some of the most scenic stretches of the Rt. 5 and 20 corridor are located in Ontario County. The corridor itself is becoming an important visitor destination valued for its rural quality, scenic landscapes, antique shops, and links to the Finger Lakes. The corridor communities both east and west of Canandaigua have became increasingly concerned that, bit by bit, the very qualities that their residents and visitors value could easily disappear. Each project is summarized below. Both studies were completed with federal funded administered by the Genesee Transportation Council. To the East In the late 1990’s, the Ontario County Planning Department obtained a federal grant through the Genesee Transportation Council to prepare a corridor management plan in partnership with the Towns of Seneca and Hopewell. The ‘eastern corridor’ study was completed in 2002. (to view the entire report click here)
To the West With a second grant, the western Ontario County Towns of Canandaigua, East Bloomfield and West Bloomfield, and the Village of Bloomfield along with the Town of Lima and Village of Lima in Livingston County completed a corridor plan in February, 2004. This project was completed as partnership with the two counties with Ontario County providing coordination. (to view the entire report please click here) Enjoy

Project
Summary
A
sewer extension to transport leachate from the Seneca landfill to either
the Geneva or Canandaigua treatment plant created a heightened public
awareness of the growth and development issues that this infrastructure
can stimulate (Click here for project report.) This study was prepared to review existing land use regulations in the Towns of Hopewell and Seneca, determine a community vision for the corridor, make recommendations for alternative development scenarios, and list the implementation steps the communities would have to undertake.
HIGHLIGHTSAlternative development pattern types were prepared which could be implemented along the corridor. They included the following types: 1) Agricultural Land Development, 2) Agricultural Mixed-Use Development, 3) Hamlet Development, 4)Regional Mixed-Use, and, Light Industrial. The intent was to show how these types could be implemented in a manner in keeping with corridor development goals. Three scenarios for overall corridor development combining the various development pattern types were prepared to demonstrate the options the towns had when they proceeded to detailed planning. STEPS The Town of Seneca updated its comprehensive plan and is currently revising their zoning ordinance following the recommendations of the study. The Town of Hopewell is going to begin a comprehensive plan update in 2004 and will utilize the findings of this study during that process.
Project
Summary The
six communities along the 22-mile 5 and 20 corridor from Canandaigua
through Lima worked together with Livingston and Ontario Counties, the
NYS Department of Transportation, and the Genesee Transportation Council
to develop a guide for development along the corridor. The municipalities included are the towns of Lima, W.
Bloomfield, East Bloomfield and Canandaigua, and the Villages of
Bloomfield and Lima. The
intent of the project was to assure that any future development fully
integrates traffic and safety considerations and is appropriately scaled
and in keeping with the corridor's unique character and defining
qualities.
