East Bloomfield – Holcomb Fire Department Ambulance

The East Bloomfield-Holcomb Fire Department was formed in 1922.  It started out with 39 men from the community.  At that time the volunteers would respond to fires and other service calls in the East Bloomfield and Holcomb communities. In 1953, the Fire department decided to purchase its first ambulance, a 1941 Packard.   As there was no emergency squad at the time, the ambulance was staffed with firefighters using the “scoop and go” method as no formal EMS training was available.

The Fire Department decided to purchase a second ambulance in 1959.  It was a used 1956 Cadillac station wagon.  In 1963 the department purchased its first new ambulance, a Cadillac Miller Meteor station wagon. All subsequent ambulances were new and included a 1969 Cadillac Superior, a 1975 Chevy Superior ( the departments first Type III ), a 1981 Ford Horton ( Type II ), and a 1985 Ford Wheeled Coach ( Type III ).

During the 1980’s, select members of the Fire Department received advanced first aid training and were allowed to administer oxygen to patients. Formal training of EMT’s finally resulted in the formation of the East Bloomfield-Holcomb Fire Department Emergency Squad, which coincided with New York State Department of Health certification in the early 1990’s.

The Emergency Squad has been a formal entity since that time and covers about 230 calls per year in the Town of East Bloomfield. In August of this year, members were certified in the use of Epinephrine and are working towards certification in Albuterol administration.

All eighteen (18) of the East Bloomfield-Holcomb Squad members are volunteers.  They take pride and dedication in caring for their neighbors during emergencies.  They also provide standby’s for community events and sporting events.  Volunteers staff regular crews from 9pm – 6am every night while daytime calls are covered by all those available.

In August 2007, the Ontario County EMS Advisory Board recommended that the East Bloomfield Fire Department Ambulance be recognized for their hard work and dedication to their community.  A resolution was passed by the Ontario County Board of Supervisors on September 13, 2007, to recognize that hard work and dedication.  Congratulations.
