Pistol Permit Procedures

 New Application Procedures:

Applications for Pistol Permits for Ontario County residents are available at the Ontario County Clerk's Office, 20 Ontario St., Canandaigua, N.Y. 14424. There is a $3.00 fee for the application. You may receive an application through the mail if you send us the $3.00 fee and a postage paid, self addressed large manila envelope for the return of the application. Postage will be approximately $1.00.

References:

Four character references are needed to sign the two applications and complete a reference sheet. The references must be residents of Ontario County and must be acquaintances of yours for at least five years. Character references may not be relatives of the applicant. References cannot be related to each other (ex. Husband and wife). If you are unable to meet the five-year requirement for your references, list the references anyway and specify the number of years you have been acquainted. Then you will also need to get 4 additional references from where you previously lived.

Fees:

Effective January 1, 2010 fingerprints for pistol permits are administered and submitted electronically by L1 Enrollment Services. Visit their website at www.L1enrollment.com or call 877-472-6915 for locations and current fees. Payment is due when scheduling or at the assigned appointment date. The purchase of a gun is not required to get a pistol permit. Processing time for the pistol permit is approximately 8 months to 1 year after submitting the application to the Clerk's Office. You will be notified by mail when your permit is approved or denied. There is a $10.00 fee due when the new pistol permit is approved.

Amending A Pistol Permit:

When amending your pistol permit there will be a $3.00 fee for each amendment. You must amend your permit in person at the Ontario County Clerk's Office. Amending your permit can consist of adding or disposing of a handgun and/or changing your name and/or address. A change of address requires the permit be amended in our office within 10 days of the change. When adding a handgun we require the make, caliber and serial number along with the name and address of who the gun came from. If it was purchased from a dealer we will require a receipt from the dealer showing the make, caliber and serial number of the gun. When disposing of a handgun we also require the name and address of who the gun was sold to along with the make, caliber and serial number of the gun.

Transferring A Pistol Permit:

When transferring your permit to another county you must complete a transfer order form through this office. There will be a $5.00 fee (payable by cash or check) for Ontario County and a $5.00 fee (payable by check only) for the county you wish to transfer to.

Applying For A Duplicate Pistol Permit:

You may apply for a duplicate permit if your current permit becomes mutilated, lost or stolen. You must apply for the duplicate in person at the Ontario County Clerk's Office. You will need to bring in 2 new, current pictures and a list of the guns you currently own. There is a $5.00 fee for the duplicate permit.

Additional Information About Pistol Permits:

If a pistol is lost or stolen notify a law enforcement agency and come into the County Clerk's Office to make an amendment to remove the lost or stolen gun from your permit. You will need the make, caliber and serial number of the handgun and the name of the law enforcement agency you reported it to.

If a pistol permit holder should pass away a family member must surrender the permit to the county in which the permit was issued from or last transferred to.

If a pistol permit holder should move out of New York State the permit must be surrendered to the county in which the permit was issued from or last transferred to. You must be a New York State resident in order to hold a New York State pistol permit.
