The County Clerk is elected by the voters of Ontario County and performs the duties prescribed by law as register, as well as clerk of the New York State Supreme Court located in Ontario County and the Clerk of the Ontario County Court itself. The Clerk also performs additional and related duties as may be prescribed by law and directed by the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.

 

The County Clerk's Office is the official depository in the County for filing, recording and depositing of documents, maps, papers and actions and special proceedings of both civil and criminal nature, as well as deeds, mortgages, judgment and lien dockets, and books for indexing of the same as directed or authorized by law. The office also issues hunting and fishing licenses as well as performing a variety of other functions.

 

The County Clerk's Office is located on the first floor of the Municipal Building which is directly behind the Ontario County Courthouse and across Ontario Street from the Canandaigua Police Department with hours daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Tel: 716-396-4200)

The New York State Supreme Court, Family Court, County Court and Surrogate Court all conduct their proceedings in the Ontario County Courthouse at the above address.

Court clerks are appointed by the New York State office of Court Administration and help in the management of the courts, including scheduling, notification, and tracking of cases, and related duties and functions required for the administration of the courts.

 

There is parking available for the Courthouse directly behind the Courthouse itself and across from the Ontario County Jail on Ontario Street.
