Following a free Sept 12 information session, this four-part series addresses the cause of disease - rather than just treating the symptoms - and is presented by Kerry Graff, MD, and Linda Rowsick, RD, CD-N. Participants will learn about how diet impacts your health, the benefits of eating a whole-food/plant-based diet, and how to transition to a healthier diet. When two co-registrants - who register and pay at the same time - we will provide one set of books and handouts therefore discounting registration fee to $225. Participants will not be refunded for classes missed (should a participant have an extenuating circumstance, a written request for a refund will be considered).

The overall purpose of this program, presented by UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Institute's Sands Cancer Center at Thompson Health and UR Medicine Home Care, is to enable participants to integrate care and communication strategies into everyday practice, to address the complex needs of patients. Topics will include: "Heroin: Its Impact on the Community", "Communication at the End of Life", "Financial Exploitation of the Elderly", "Motivational Interviewing" and "Caregiver Self Care." Community agencies and resources will also be present. This annual chicken barbecue benefits palliative care at the M. M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, the 178-bed skilled-nursing facility operated by UR Medicine Thompson Health in Canandaigua. The meals, by Grove Boys Catering of Naples, each will include a marinated half chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw and a dinner roll. A 50/50 raffle held during the barbecue will raise additional funds. Palliative Care at M. M. Ewing includes comforting items such as handmade quilts and CDs with soothing music as well as iPads for video chats with long-distance family members. IN addition, the program provides information for families regarding the end-of-life process and a "comfort cart" for families keeping vigil - with bottled water, snacks and toiletries. Special furniture is also provided, for family members who wish to stay overnight alongside their loved one.
