The Ontario County Sheriff's Office is proud to sponsor the "Do the Right Thing" award program. In today’s society, we are always quick to point out when a young person does something wrong. But what about when they do something right? We believe it’s time these adolescents are recognized when It’s about choices – right choices versus wrong choices – which we all need to make in life and we have done our best to instill these same core values in our children. But unlike adults, who are expected to make the right choices, kids need acknowledgment and encouragement when those right choices are made.
Modeled after several other police agencies programs, such as the Miami Police Department and the Rochester Police Department, the Ontario County Do The Right Thing Program looks to award 2 students from grades K – 12 every month who have shown that they have made the right choices distinguishing themselves as a role model and leader among their peers and community. The awards will be given out at a special ceremony once a month honoring those individuals at the Ontario County Jail located at 3045 County Complex Dr., Canandaigua NY. Winners receive a plaque, a framed certificate, a gift card from Wal*Mart, McDonald's food coupons and other prizes to be determined.
Nominees must reside and attend school (grades K – 12) in Ontario County. Fill out and submit the Nomination Form here

Ontario County In December the awards committee had 2 such strong candidates that to choose only one would not have been fair to the other. Cheyane Franchuk assisted her mother in the delivery of her newborn brother Caleb Franchuck. On October 8th 2009 at about 1:25am, Tamara Franchuck went into labor at home. Prior to the arrival of EMS, Tamara’s water broke and delivery of the child was imminent. With the assistance of her mother and a 911 dispatcher, Cheyane assisted her mother in the delivery of Caleb at home. During the entire delivery, Cheyane remained calm and spoke with the 911 dispatcher who assisted by providing instructions over the phone. Once Caleb was delivered, Cheyane wrapped the baby in blankets and clamped the umbilical cord. By the time the ambulance arrived on scene, Caleb Franchuk was in mom’s arms. In recognition of Cheyane’s calm, cool, collective composure during the delivery and the care of her baby brother, we are proud to present the December 2009 “Do the Right Thing Award” to Cheyane Franchuk.
Destiny Calaci: This is a heroic story of a 7 year-old young lady who acted quickly and bravely upon discovering a fire in her home. On October 8th 2009 at about 12:20am, the Calaci family was sound asleep in their Feather Street home in Naples. Destiny, who was sleeping downstairs, awakened to find the wood stove in the living room engulfed in flames. With the fire burning and the house filling up with smoke, Destiny ran upstairs and woke up her mother and five siblings. Because of her actions the entire family made it out of the house safely. The Naples Fire Department responded to the home and were able to extinguish the fire and clear the house of smoke. In recognition of Destiny’s courageous actions, which can be credited with saving the lives of her family, we are proud to present the December 2009 “Do the Right Thing Award” to Destiny Calaci.
