Ontario County posts updates for the Honeoye Lake Aquatic Vegetation Management Program (AVMP) on the County’s website (www.co.ontario.ny.us). These updates are often shared in the community via email or social media. At times, conflicting reports are posted to social media which do not accurately portray AVMP operations. The following information is intended to clear up any confusion that may exist surrounding the end of year activities for the harvesting program.
September 13, 2016 was the last day of harvesting. Harvesting occurred from Pickerel Point to Southwest Shores and Dana Shores.
On September 21 and 22, 2016, the harvester was used at the south end to skim weeds floating at the surface or a few inches below. No cutting was performed on these dates. Approximately four wet tons were removed.
The final harvesting (or cutting) in September helps to maintain navigation but is primarily aimed at removal of plants at the end of their growing season. These plants will soon die and decompose in the lake, adding nutrients to the system. With limited visibility, the September harvesting effort was significantly reduced.
Skimming of floating or matted vegetation (using the harvester’s conveyor to collect, but not cut) and shoreline collection (using the work barge and hand tools) are two secondary strategies utilized by the program to reduce nuisance plant fragments and associated nutrients both in the lake and shoreline environment.
While the harvester has now been removed from the lake, the work barge continues to operate on a part-time basis through the end of September.
