Our challenging mission is to contribute to community safety, assist victims, and provide opportunities for both adult and juvenile offenders to gain the skills needed to live lawfully. To accomplish this, we strive to provide a wide variety of effective but highly cost-efficient services using innovative programming that is appropriate for Ontario County.

Additionally, the department provides intake access to the courts for the public seeking resolution of matters concerning custody and visitation, and conducts investigations relative to custody and visitation matters. The merger with Alternatives to Incarceration in 2004 has expanded our role and includes community service sentencing, pre-trial release services, enhanced with electronic home monitoring, as well as strengthening relations with Drug Court and Restorative Justice Planning.

Although the department follows the mandates generated and monitored by the New York State Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, probation is a county function.

As peace officers within New York, probation personnel are very involved in matters relating to community safety. Consistent with this concern is our effort to assure that staff is safe both in our offices and in the community they serve.

We do, however, strive to keep this role in balance with our service delivery functions, whether that includes writing reports for various courts or providing counseling and referral services for both juvenile and the adults receiving services. Inherent in these functions is the ongoing need to maintain close partnerships with a wide variety of agencies throughout Ontario County.
